Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi asked the Rajasthan government to look into the reason behind the filing of a petition by the Child Welfare Committee in Bharatpur against the adoption of five girls by foreign nationals.

She said the plea was filed despite the foreign nationals being permitted to adopt the girls under the Indian law.

According to a media report cited by Gandhi, the Child Welfare Committee (CWC), Bharatpur had filed a writ in a family court against adoption of the girls by foreigners from an orphanage in the city.

Gandhi asked the Rajasthan government and the state's chief minister Vasundhara Raje to look into the matter.

"I have requested them to look into the matter why members of Child Welfare Committee in Bharatpur moved a writ petition against adoption by foreign nationals despite them being permitted to adopt under the Indian law," she said yesterday.
