Maneka lauds 'Sukanya Samriddhi Yojna'

Union Minister Maneka Gandhi today asked people to open accounts and put in money under 'Sukanya Samriddhi Yojna' (girl child prosperity scheme) launched by Prime Minister to secure future of girls.

Addressing a school function here, the Women and Child Development minister said that the country needs such initiatives which create awareness for girl child and promote the interest of the girls.

"PM has recently launched the scheme under which you have to put in money in the account opened for the girl.

This is a very good scheme and every parents having girl child should put in money for their girls in the scheme account," Gandhi said.
 

She said that a minimum of Rs 1,000 can be deposited in the account opened in the name after the girl and higher rates of interest at 9.1 per cent is proposed to be given on the deposits on annually compounded basis with income tax concession.

She also suggested the school students to open 'kindness club' to conduct various activities and also motivated them to plant trees in order to address the challenges like pollution and others.

In the function at Birla auditorium, students of the Palace School gave colourful performances with messages of 'save girl' and 'donate eyes'.
