Minister for Women and Child Development Maneka Gandhi will inaugurate a conference on child adoption in Shillong tomorrow which is aimed at familiarising the stakeholders with the adoption programme in North-east states.

The one-day conference is expected to be attended by the Social Welfare and Women and Child Development Ministers from the North Eastern states of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura, an official release said today.

The conference is being organised with a view to familiarise the stakeholders with the adoption programme in North Eastern states, about the provisions relating to adoption under the new Juvenile Justice Act and also orient them about the online adoption process through Child Adoption Resource Information and Guidance System (CARINGS), it said.

As many as 400 delegates are expected to attend the conference, including the stakeholders from the State Adoption Resource Agencies, District Child Protection Units, child welfare committees, Specialised Adoption Agencies (SAAs) and child care institutions, among others, in the North Eastern States, the release said.
