Amid tight security, Manipur Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh today inaugurated two new districts which were carved out of as many Naga-dominated districts.

Singh inaugurated Pherzawl, carved out of Churachandpur district, and Noney from Tamenglong district.

During the Pherzawl function, Singh said a district is not created for a particular community but to bring infrastructure development in the interior hill areas.

The programmes were held amidst tight security to foil any attempt to disturb the inauguration programme.

Apprehension about possible attacks by militants ran high after unidentified militants attacked a police commando team last evening injuring three, said a police officer.

The exchange of fire at Noney followed the twin ambush yesterday morning which left three policemen dead and 11 others injured.

The Chief Minister along with his deputy Gaikhangam and other ministers first went to Pherzawl district by chopper and then headed for Noney at around 2 pm where he formally declared the inauguration of Noney district.

The chief minister and his entourage returned to the state capital at around 4 PM, said the police officer.
