Manipur today observed Patriots' Day in memory of state heroes who laid down their lives fighting the British during the Anglo-Manipuri war of 1891.
A state function was held this morning at Hicham Yaichampat and Thangal General Temple complex, in the heart of Imphal, to pay tributes to Bir Tikendrajit and Thangal General, who were hanged to death on August 13, 1891 for waging a war against the colonialists.
The programme was attended by Chief Minister N Biren Singh, council of ministers, top police officers and civil officials among others.
A contingent of Manipur Rifles also paid gun salute to the martyrs on this occasion.
At another programme organised by the BJP Manipur Pradesh later in the day, the CM urged the youth to imbibe in them a sense of patriotism.
"Our forefathers fought the war with courage and valour, despite knowing that the British Empire was more powerful than them," he said.

The 1891 Anglo-Manipur War, between March 31 and April 27, ended in a British victory.
"The present government will never compromise the territorial integrity of the state," the CM added.
In a statement issued by the Raj Bhavan, Governor Najma Heptullah today extended her best wishes to the people of Manipur.
"August 13 is observed as Patriots' Day every year in memory of those who laid down their lives resisting the British colonial designs in 1891," she said.
