Senior Congress leader Manoj Shinde was appointed as president of Thane Congress committee.

The appointment assumes significance in the light of the crucial civic body election in Thane and Mumbai next year, an official press note said.

The office was lying vacant for the last several years after former president Balkrishna Purnekar was sacked following alleged irregularities.

Later, a panel was formed, including senior congress leaders from the city, and Shinde's appointment was announced last night.
