Shiv Kumar alias Shiva, a cadre of CPI (Maoist) who hails from Jharkhand's Ranchi and is an expert in handling landmines and sophisticated arms, was apprehended by Delhi Police's Crime Branch from Rohini yesterday. A 9 mm pistol with two live cartridges were allegedly recovered from him.

He is allegedly involved in the November 2011 ambush on security forces in Dhardhariya jungle in Lohardagga district in which 11 security personnel were killed and 50 others were injured. Around 400 Maoists participated in the action.

"He is an expert in land mines, explosives and IED and weapon handling. He is an ace guerrilla fighter and close associate of local area commander in Jharkhand. He has been deeply indoctrinated on Left Wing ideology and heads the Local Guerrilla Squad (LSG)," DCP (Crime) Sanjay Kumar Jain said.

This is the second arrest of a Maoist hailing from Jharkhand in the capital in the past one month. Pradeep Kumar, a Maoist who was wanted in the murder of a senior police officer 12 years ago and had participated in an agitation for separate statehood for Jharkhand, was arrested on May 10.

A senior police official said Shiva is well-versed in the theories of Karl Marx, Lenin and Mao and has taken part in around 200 Maoist operations against security forces in Jharkhand's Lohardaga and Latehar districts. He joined the CPI (Maoist) in 2008.

"He has undertaken firearms training and can dismantle a pistol in seconds. He is an expert in long range fire with INSAS Rifle, 303 rifle, SLR and AK-47. He always preferred the large weapon to smaller side-arms. He has been trained to assemble and plant IEDs as landmines," Jain said. MORE
