A court in Ernakulam today remanded Maoist couple Roopesh and Shyna, accused of providing shelter to Maoist leader Mallaraja Reddy and his wife Suguna, to judicial custody till June 10.
Roopesh and Shyna were remanded by Additional Sessions Judge M Nandakumar and sent to district jail in Kakkanad here, police said adding the proceedings were held incamera.
They were brought here from the Central Prison in Coimbatore where they had been lodged after their arrest there in a joint operation by police of southern states earlier this month.
While producing them, Kerala Police sought custody of the two Maoists, slapped with offences under Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. The court will hear the police's plea on May 22, police said.
The judge allowed the couple, who had gone underground following Reddy's arrest in 2007, to meet their children briefly in the court premises.
The children later alleged that the Kerala police had threatened to eliminate their parents while taking them to the forests for collecting evidences.
Earlier, the Maoist couple raised slogans for protection of Western Ghats and tribal rights when they were being taken to the court amidst tight security.
Roopesh, wanted in at least 20 cases in Kerala, along with Shyna, Anup, Veeramani and Kannan were arrested on May 4 at Karumathampatti near Coimbatore by a joint team of Andhra, Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu police.
