Maoists gunned down a tribal man in Kalimela area of Odisha's Malkangiri district, suspecting him to be a police informer, a police official said today.

A group of ultras had kidnapped Gurumurti Madhi from his village Telerai on the night of August 15 and his bullet-ridden body was found this morning along a forest road nearby, said Malkangiri Superintendent of Police Mitrabhanu Mohapatra.

Madhi's body was spotted by the villagers, who informed the police about the incident, he said, adding a police team was rushed to the site.

A hand written poster was left at the spot by the assailants in which they stated that Gurumurti was killed as he was operating as an informer for the police and working against activities of Left Wing extremists, police said.

Combing operation and patrolling by the security forces was intensified in the area after the killing, the SP added.
