Maoists shot dead two persons and injured another suspecting them as police informers and also for participating in the recent election in two villages in Mathili area of Malkangiri district, police said today.

A group of armed ultras dragged out three men from their houses and took them to a distance before killing two of them. The other man was beaten up before he was released last night.

The bodies of the two men with gun-shot marks were found on the outskirts of their villages this morning.

The deceased were identified as Talashankar Bhuyan of Udaygiri village and Dhobunu Nayak of Kopara village.

Posters found near the bodies stated that the two were eliminated as they had taken active part in the elections held on April 10 and encouraged villagers to cast their votes despite a poll boycott call given by the Maoists.

Moreover, the duo operated as police informers in the area and were working against Maoists, the ultras claimed in the posters.

Police reinforcements have been sent to the area and combing operation has been launched.
