Maoists opened fire in air at a function causing injury to two villagers during the stampede and set ablaze a vehicle at Marangdih in Naxal-hit Khunti district, police today said.

A group of 20 Maoists arrived in the village and inquired about the SPOs when a function was in progress at the village last night, Superintendent of Police Anis Gupta told reporters.

When panicky villagers did not respond, the ultras opened fire in the air, resulting in the villagers to scamper away, he said, adding two persons suffered injuries in the incident.

The injured persons - identified as Birsa Pahan and Mara Pahan - were taken to a nearby hospital but the doctors referred them to Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences in Ranchi.

Later, the ultras torched a mini truck parked in the area.
