As part of a series of protests in various districts of Maharashtra, lakhs of people of Maratha community today took part in a silent march here to press for their demands.

The 'Maratha kranti morcha' started from Shivaji statue on Prakasha Road and ended at the District Collector's office where a group of girls submitted a memorandum to the Collector Dilip Pasandharpatte.

As in other cities, the march was conducted in a disciplined manner and went off peacefully

The politically dominant Maratha community has been holding marches at various cities across the state for the last one month.

Their demands include stern action against the culprits of Kopardi rape and murder case, reservations for the community, and scrapping of SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

The silent marches began after the rape and murder of a Maratha girl at Kopardi in Ahmednagar district in July. The accused are from a different community.
