Marathwada drought: Woman succumbs after suicide attempt

A 32-year-old woman succumbed to burn injuries after she allegedly attempted suicide reportedly over starvation due to prevalent drought situation in Ambi village of Osmanabad district here.

Manisha Gatkal, who was fed up with unemployment and starvation owing to drought situation in the region, immolated herself last Saturday, following which she was admitted to Osmanabad district hospital, police said today.

However, she was shifted to a hospital in Solapur in serious condition as she had suffered 80 per cent burns. She died yesterday, they said.

The victim's husband, a labourer, had no work in the region and so the couple could not even have two square of meals a day, police said.
 

A case of accidental death has been registered in this connection, police said, adding, the matter is being investigated.
