Marriages of three minor girls prevented

Acting on a tip-off, the district authorities today prevented three minor girls from the city from being married off by their families, an official said.

The parents of the girls aged between 15 and 17 years had planned to marry them off over the next two weeks.

"Our department warned their parents and prevented the weddings," District Women Empowerment Officer Sanjay Bhardwaj told PTI here.

The officials warned parents of the girl that marrying her off at the age of 16 is illegal.

After persuasion, parents of the three girls gave undertakings that they would not get their daughters married till they attain the age of 18.
 

As per the law, the marriageable age of boy and girl is 21 and 18 respectively and entering into the wedlock below it invites two years rigrous imprisonment or a fine of Rs 1 lakh or both according to the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006.
