The Army today handed over a cheque of Rs 75 lakh to the mother of Maj David Manlun, who laid down his life during an encounter with armed militants in Nagaland last month.

General Officer in command of the Army's 101 Area Lt Gen D S Ahuja handed over the cheque to Mannuam Niang at the residence of the martyred Major here.

The amount Rs 75 lakh is terminal benefit from the Army.

Maj Manlun, 32, killed three militants during the encounter and enabled recovery of a huge cache of arms and ammunition in Mon district of Nagaland last month.

He said Manlun's family is set to get Rs 40-50 lakh more including Central government's ex-gratia.

Manlun's mother told the media that she was proud of her son.

"My son died like a hero and I am proud of the sacrifice he made," she said.

The family members and friends of the late officer of Territorial Army 164 Brigade were present on the occasion.
