Rout claimed that the fire of unrest had been simmering since long in the plant but none strived to address it in right earnest.

"We have sought reports from out local unit and are also studying other reports before reaching any conclusion as to who was at fault", he said.

The AICTU leader also said that the labour department needs to be given more teeth to avoid such incidents in the future.

Rout is in Jodhpur to chair a three-day working committee meeting of AICTU from today to discuss various issues pertaining to the problems faced by workers in particularly and people in general.

The issues include low income and wages, rising prices of essential commodities, rampant unemployment, devaluation of the Indian Rupee, forcible acquisition of agricultural land and communal harmony.

The AICTU president also accused the government with failure to deal with these issues and taking up measures like diversifying production, reducing import volume and increase exports.

Opposing FDI in the retail sector, he said this step will affect four crore small retailers in the country who will either have to fold up their business or cut back their operations.

"The government should instead promote the agriculture sector and pave the way for extension and expansion of industries in the country to address the unemployment problem", Rout suggested.

The meeting is a precursor to the forthcoming 6th all India AICTU conference at Chandigarh from September 28, Union sources said.
