A group of farmers affected by Gokul barrage here today asked President Pranab Mukherjee to either compensate them or to give them permission for euthanasia.

A fax and a registered letter has been sent to the President requesting to either to adequately compensate those waiting since the last 17 years or else allow them permission to commit suicide on August 15, said Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha Uttar Pradesh unit president Kunwar Pal Singh Nishad.

He said the number of those affected has reached 40,000 and added that these farmers would now prefer to die as despite repeated demands adequate compensation has not been handed out to them.

In 1998, 942 farm families were affected in 11 villages after 700 hecatre of land was submerged due to Gokul barrage, Nishad added.
