Lawyers protesting for the establishment of an extra High Court bench in the state suspended their stir on Thursday.
Currently, the Allahabad High Court has a bench in Lucknow and the lawyers are demanding that another one be set up either in Agra or Meerut to reduce the pendency of cases.
Khandpeeth Sthapana Sangh convener Lalit Sharma said the protest has been suspended for now as it was felt that the agitation needed public support.
The protest has been suspended to garner public support, Sharma added.
Demanding an extra bench of the High court in Uttar Pradesh, advocates of Mathura had started their agitation on January 21.
Sharma said for the past 40 years, the Bar Association has been observing weekly one-day strike but the government has not taken any steps in this direction.
The only answer to reduce the pendency of cases is to set up an extra bench of the High Court in west UP, he concluded.
