A 24-year-old MBA student was today arrested for duping around 70 unemployed youths by collecting at least Rs 3.5 lakh from them on the pretext of providing suitable placements to them.

The accused has been identified as Tapan Tulo, native of Nabrangpur in Odisha, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) S Varada Raju told reporters.

Tapan, an engineering graduate who is pursuing an MBA course at a college in Bangalore, had posted a placement advertisement on a website and provided two fake e-mail addresses and a mobile number for contact, following which around 70 unemployed youths, including some B Tech graduates had contacted him.

Thereafter, he created fake appointment letters and sent them to all the candidates. Believing that they have actually got placement, each candidate deposited Rs 5,000 in his bank account.

However, when the youths came to know the reality, two victims from Visakhapatnam, B Ramesh and Y Venkata Satish Kumar lodged a police complaint at a city police station.

"Based on the account details and the ATM card number of the accused, a team of city police arrested Tapan from Bangalore," a police officer said, adding further investigation is on.
