A meeting chaired by Dakshina Kannada MP Nalin Kumar Kateel here has suggested that the Mangaluru City Corpration (MCC) and the industrial units in the area share cost of repair works of the road between Surathkal and Kana in the city, which was in a poor condition due to the movement of heavy vehicles.

Kateel said the amount required for the repair, estimated at Rs 1.52 crore, was unlikely to be released by the government immediately and the MCC should bear 30 per cent of the cost and industrial units should bear the balance. The industries in the area include MRPL, HPCL, BPCL and MCF should share the amount for repair as movement of heavy vehicles to these units had turned the road not motorable.

Meanwhile, the Nagarika Horata Samiti, Kana, has called for blocking the Surathkal-Kana-MRPL road on October 26 from 7 am to 6 pm to press authorities to take up immediate repair works.

Samiti convenor B K Imtiyaz in a release here said the local shopkeepers had supported the call.

The MCC and major industries using the road, where more than 10,000 vehicles were plying daily, had not taken any steps to repair the road, he said.
