MCI received 424 complaints of misconduct by doctors

As many as 399 of these complaints have been referred to to the state Medical Councils/governments, while another 13 cases were "under construction", Minister for Health and Family Welfare Ghulam Nabi Azad said in a written reply.

In reply to another question, Azad said an independent vigilance division has been established in MCI in January 2011 and 124 complaints have been received by it since then.

Of these, the MCI has conducted 38 cases and appropriate disciplinary action has been recommended/taken against the officials found guilty.

The Minister said the MCI has been established with the objective to maintain, coordinate and regulate the standards of medical education throughout the country to ensure adequate availability of doctors in the country and to regulate the practice of medicine by medical professionals, as also to maintain an Indian Medical Registry.
