Punjab Health Minister Brahm Mohindra said today that the measles and rubella vaccination was totally safe and condemned the "malicious campaign" against it by some people.

A child's death in Bathinda recently led to allegations that the MR vaccination was responsible for it.

Mohindra said a preliminary investigation by experts showed that the death had no link with the vaccination.

"As per the doctors attending the patient, the cause of death is acute gastroenteritis with severe dehydration," he said, according to a government press release.

Mohindra said about eight children across 14 states and union territories have got the MR vaccine shots. In Punjab, 14 lakh children have been administered the vaccine under a state government campaign.

He said today itself about two lakh children were immunized which reflected an acceptance of the state's campaign.

Rejecting to the "anti-vaccine propaganda", the minister said anybody was welcome to clear their doubts from experts.

Sanjay Verma, Additional Professor, Paediatrics at Post Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research said the disease was still a big challenge and he had himself attended to several patients at PGIMER.

He said deaths could be avoided by a simple vaccination.
