"Earlier demand for the silk was from the neighbouring states, but now its demand is expanding to foreign countries. For this we have stressed on increasing the production of silk moth and replace hand looms by power looms in the government run manufacturing units," the minister told reporters here.
"The sale of silk has doubled this year than the last year and the state government has earned about Rs one crore as profit," he said.
The minister said Mulberry was cultivated in about 3,352 acres by about 7,000 cultivators and the government was active in increasing the areas under this production.
The production of silk sarees would be raised from 3,969 pieces to 8,750 pieces in government farms this year. Besides the government has decided for value addition by introducing new designs, he said.
A textile designer, Tapasi Debbarma said to add to value addition more beautiful designs needed to be developed and applied and to this end local entrepreneurs should be encouraged.
