The medical officer of Pattamundai sub-divisional hospital in Kendrapara district was arrested today on the charge of medical negligence causing death of an eight-year-old girl.

Sujata Nayak, down with pneumonia, was rushed to hospital late last night but Medical officer Bhaskar Chandra Kar allegedly did not turn up to attend the seriously ill girl, Sub Divisional Police Officer, Kedarnath Sahu said.

As the girl died, tension escalated in Pattamundai township areas with a mob locking up the doctor.

The mob alleged the doctor was in a drunken state as policemen had a tough time in quelling the crowd and rescuing the medical officer, the SDPO said.

The accused has been booked under IPC sections 294 (obscene act in public), and 304-A (causing death by negligence not amounting to culpable homicide) and remanded to judicial custody later.

Chief District Medical Officer Binayak Prusty said "a departmental inquiry is being conducted into alleged alcoholic nuisance on part of the doctor. The medical negligence charge is also being probed".
