A first year student of a private medical college here allegedly committed suicide at his hostel room leading to the institute being closed sine die.
The body of the student was found hanging in his hostel room.
The incident came to light when the student's friends knocked on his door in the morning to go to class. As he did not respond, they broke open the door and found him hanging.
"The students informed us and the hostel warden," a senior police official said adding he was rushed to a city hospital where doctors was declared him brought dead.
Angry students went on the rampage and ransacked the college, the police said adding two platoons of the force have been deployed in the college.
The Vice-chancellor Amit Banerjee has termed the incident an "unfortunate" one.
