Four men, including a pharmacist

of a government dispensary, have been arrested for allegedly selling medicines meant for government hospitals in the open market.

A huge cache of medicines which include life-saving drugs and antibiotics worth more than Rs 5 lakh was recovered from the gang.

The arrested have been identified as Shahid Usmani alias Bablu (32), Sanjay Kumar (42), Manoj Rajpal (35) and Swaraj Dhankhad (57).

Swaraj Dhankad worked at a government dispensary in Najafgarh as a pharmacist and used to provide medicines meant for supply to government hospitals and ESI dispensaries, to other members of the gang to be sold in the open market, police said.

Usmani, resident of Agra, and Rajpal were arrested on January 17 from near Bhagirath Palace in Chandni Chowk after police laid a trap based on a tip-off, said Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Ravindra Yadav.

Medicines and injections were recovered from their possession.

Dhankad and Kumar were arrested later based on information provided by Usmani, police said, adding that the gang was involved in this illegal trade for the last 4-5 years.

According to Yadav, it has been revealed that the accused Dhankad and Sanjay used to obtain costly medicines meant for government health scheme beneficiaries and sell the same to Usmani on commission, who would further sell the same to Rajpal. The medicines were further sold as per the requirements of customers.
