Himachal BJP today strongly defended the move of the governor Acharya Devvrat to convene meeting of officers and social organizations to discuss key issues of utmost public concern and described the reaction of Congress as expression of"extreme intolerance and disrespect" towardsconstitutional office.

"The Governor is chief custodian of the constitution and whenever he observes that the government is not working in a right direction, he has full right to issue necessary directions," BJP spokesman Ganesh Dutt said in a statement issued here today.

Asking the Congress leaders to show respect to office of the governor and maintain its dignity, Dutt said that the points shortlisted by the Governor for broader discussions were of utmost importance for every citizen and as such the accusation of the Congress and CPI(M) that he was trying to run a parallel government was "Uncalled for, unwanted and unfortunate".

Asserting that the governor Acharya Devvrat was an imminent educationist and apolitical person, Dutt said that he wanted to work for overall development of the state and was trying to seek cooperation of all sections of the society.

"The reaction of Congress leaders only exposed their intolerance and cheap politics by not sparing even the office of the governor," the statement added.

On November 3, the Governor had convened a meeting of secretaries and other stakeholders at Raj Bhawan and urged for launching active social campaigns for creating awareness about increasing drug menace, caste discrimination, organic farming and environmental issues, which are "crucial" for the development of the state.
