Mega convention on biodiversity in Hyderabad in October

The convention will be held from October 1 to 19 and arrangements are going on in full swing, Chairman of Andhra Pradesh State Biodiversity Board R Hampaiah told reporters here today.

There will be a conference on biotechnology (bio safety protocol) from October 1 to 5 while a Conference of the Parties (COP 11) will be held on October 8 and 19. Then, forest ministers of 90 countries and some heads of states will meet on October 17, 18 and 19 which will be known as High Level Segment which will come out with a declaration or protocol, he said.

 

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and President Pranab Mukherjee are expected to attend the event while the Vice President is expected to come for the opening of the convention on October 1, he said.

Representatives of global bodies like UNESCO, United Nations Environment Programme and World Bank would also attend the mega event.

The Centre is spending about Rs 600 crore for organising the convention, while the state government has already released Rs 252 crore for various things including beautification of the state capital and security arrangements.
