Meghalaya bus mishap: 25 bodies retrieved from site

The bodies of 25 of the 29 people, who were killed when the bus they were travelling in rolled down a 500-feet deep gorge in Meghalaya's East Jaintia Hills district, have been recovered so far, police said today.

The search operation, involving paramilitary forces, state police and homeguard personnel, had retrieved only seven bodies till last night from the accident site at Sonapur, a senior district police official told PTI.

The search and rescue teams retrieved 18 more bodies after beginning the operation again early today and using ropes and iron cutters. The remaining will be retrieved tomorrow, he said.
 

The Guwahati-bound night bus skidded off the road and fell into the gorge along the NH 44 in Sonapur area at around 10 pm on June 14.

Twenty-nine persons were killed and nine others injured in the accident. The injured were admitted to the nearby health centres and hospital in Shillong.
