In the backdrop of Meghalaya's official bid to host the National Games 2022, Governor V Shanmuganathan today said the state would upscale investment in sports to host such mega sporting events in the future, a month after successfully co-hosting the 12th South Asian Games.

"Building on the positive momentum achieved, my government will further upscale investment in the domain of sports to achieve higher visibility and meaningful outcome," Shanmuganathan said while addressing the Budget session of the state assembly.

The state successfully hosted 7 disciplines of the recently concluded 12th South Asian Games in which over 800 athletes and officials from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan Sri Lanka and India participated.

He said, "Hosting the landmark multi-disciplinary and multinational sports extravaganza - the 12th South Asian Games - during February at Shillong was indeed a feather in the cap of my government."

He said the successful hosting of this first-ever international sporting event in the state had galvanized the overall sporting scenario while contributing substantially to the infrastructural development and enriching capabilities of both the officials and sports personnel of the state for hosting such mega events in the future.
