To improve sanitation in rural areas and in congested cities and towns in the state, the Meghalaya government will sign an MoU with the Defence Research and Development Authority (DRDO) to implement the latter's eco-friendly toilets, officials said today.

The eco-friendly bio-digester toilets mainly used by the army in high altitude regions of the Himalayas has caught the fascination of Chief Minister Mukul Sangma during a recent meeting in Delhi, they said.

"Come up with a concrete proposal for implementation of the project in the state," Sangma told DRDO officials at a recent presentation in the national capital.

He also assured the DRDO key scientist Dr Lokendra Singh that the matter once proposed would be effectively facilitated through an appropriate policy adoption such as building bye-laws and other legislation as may be required.

According to the Chief Minister, the innovative technology for sanitation could be integrated with the conventional septic-tank model, besides a drinking water machine as part of the bio-toilet complex.
