Meghalaya joined the rest of the country by taking part in the Swachh Bharat Mission with cleanliness drives launched across the state to commemorate Gandhi Jayanti.
State Governor K K Paul administered the cleanliness pledge to a gathering comprising Cabinet ministers, senior government officials, public and school students held at the Polo grounds in the city.
Speaking on the occasion, Paul urged all the citizens of the state to join the campaign to make clean and green environment.

The highlights of the day included presentations of certificates for Green volunteers under the Mission Green to 44 youths who have shown exemplary performance to make clean and green Meghalaya, distribution of prizes to the winners of Swachh Bharat Run organised by the Sport and Youth Affairs Department followed by planting of tree saplings by the Governor and other dignitaries around the Jawaharlal Nehru Sports Complex.
Speaking on Mahatma Gandhi, Paul said the Father of the Nation had given us freedom and honour and we need to remain eternally grateful to him.
"The entire world knows him (Gandhi) as the apostle of peace and nonviolence and therefore, today is also observed as the 'International Day of Non Violence'," he said.
The Governor further stated that Gandhi's entire life has been a model for all of us and his action has a lesson for the entire nation.
