"The state home department has sought 76 companies of para-military forces from the Centre for deployment in sensitive areas especially in the five Garo Hills districts," Director General of Police Kulbir Kishan said.
More than 800 polling stations were declared "sensitive and hyper-sensitive" in the militant-affected Garo tribal dominated districts, sources said.
The state police chief said that early deployment of forces could be used for counter insurgency operations before the polls.
In 2008, 48 companies of para-military forces were deployed in 60 constituencies of the state.
Quoting "intelligence inputs" received by the police, Kishan said that Khasi tribal militant outfit, the banned Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) have been trying to regroup ahead of the poll.
With an additional 886 polling stations this time apart from the existing 1599 polling booth, sources in the home department said more than 10,0000 additional central security forces personnel would be required to man the affected areas for free and peaceful electioneering process.
