Addressing a press conference here, John F Kharshiing, Chairman, Grand Council of Chiefs of Meghalaya today said they have met Tribal Affairs Minister Kishore Chandra Deo who promised to look into their demands.

A delegation of 20 Khasi, Jaintia and Garo chiefs, had met the union minister yesterday.

"We have a non-political form of governance in our Khasi areas. We are facing problems with certain legislations that are in conflict with the treaty of Instrument of Accession and conditional agreement signed by the centre in 1947 to protect our rights. We want constitutional amendments to include our rights," Kharshiing said.

The Council had apprised the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes of the constitutional anamolies with the special provisions to safeguard their traditional social rights signed under the Instrument of Accession (IOA) with the centre in 1947.
