A remote village employment council (VEC) in Meghalaya's East Garo Hills district has been awarded the 'Best performing' Gram Panchayat in the country in implementing the MGNREGA for 2012-13, an official said today.
"The VEC of Dobetkolgre Terracegittim village under Samanda C and RD Block has been awarded the Best performing Gram Panchayat in India in implementation of MGNREGS 2012-13," East Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Vijay Mantri said.
The award was received by Prodip Sangma, secretary of Dobetkolgre Terracegittim VEC from Union Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh, during the MGNREGA Sammelan last week in New Delhi, he said.

Some of the assets created in this VEC are drinking water facilities, motorable roads, retaining walls for prevention of soil erosion, check-dams, fish ponds, plantation, etc, the officer said.
Samanda C and RD Block has provided employment to 7,654 households under MGNREGS during 2012-13 with an average of 99.6 man-days per household.
The East Garo Hills District provided employment to 52,166 households with an average of 96.29 man-days per household, which ranked it as one of the best performing districts in the country in implementation of MGNREGS.
