Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti today inaugurated an automatic Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) at Pahalgam, giving a fillip to waste management at the famous tourist resort.

Mehbooba inaugurated the STP and an artificial ice skating rink at Pahalgam in south Kashmir's Anantnag district, an official spokesperson said here.

He said the chief minister also laid the foundation stone of a Water Supply Scheme at Kehribal during her tour of the district for appraising development work.

After commissioning the fully-automatic plant, the Chief Minister was informed that the facility would benefit 170 hotels, 650 residential houses and 310 huts, thus paving the way for biological disposal of sewage at the picturesque resort, the spokesman said.

With the capacity to drain out two million litres of sewage per day, the STP has been constructed at a cost of Rs 10.58 crore, and has been fully funded by Pahalgam Development Authority.

The work on second and the third phases for laying of more such STPs is also being taken up, which would cater to the areas on the outskirts of Pahalgam, he said.

The Chief Minister also inaugurated the first phase of the artificial skating rink at Nunwan, which has been constructed at a cost of Rs 3 crore by the Tourism Department.

The rink would have night skating facility and is expected to become a big attraction for the tourists.

Earlier, the Chief Minister paid obeisance at Kabamarg as well as the holy shrine of Reshmal Saab.

Mehbooba also visited Government Girls Model School, Ranibagh and interacted with the students there.
