Member of Mewat-based gang of highway robbers arrested

An alleged member of a Mewat- based gang of highway robbers, wanted in many cases, including firing on a police party in Haryana, has been arrested, police said today.

The accused, Jahid Khan (28), was arrested from Siraspur village, G T Karnal Road on Tuesday. He belongs to Mewat-based Haroon gang and was wanted in more than 10 cases of dacoity, robbery, kidnapping, DCP(Special Cell) Sanjeev Kumar Yadav said.

"On Tuesday, when police attempted to nab him, he tried to fire at the personnel. A constable snatched the loaded pistol from him," he said.

Khan has been declared a proclaimed offender in two cases at Mathura in Uttar Praesh. A reward has also been declared by Rajasthan Police for his arrest, the officer said.
 

The accused, along with his gang members, had facilitated the escape of Haroon, while he was being escorted by a team of Rajasthan Police from Hathin area in Haryana in July last year. They also robbed the police personnel of their weapons.

Haroon was arrested in December last year.

The weapons used by the gang were kept in Jahid's house. After Haroon's arrest, Jahid had reorganised the gang and carried out several armed robberies, police said.
