A six-member gang today allegedly decamped 40 sovereigns of gold valued at Rs eight lakh besides Rs three lakh from a house near Kalpetta in the district after tying up the family members, police said.
Around 2.30 am, five members of the gang broke open the front door while the sixth stood guard outside the house at Kottupara, police said.
They tied up Muhammed Haji (78), the house owner and a trader of hill produce, his 72-year-old wife and daughter and threatened to kill them if they did not part with the keys of the almirahs, they said.

The gang decamped with the booty by taking the car parked outside the house. However, the car was later found abandoned, police said.
The incident came to light when Haji's son, residing nearby, came to the house in the morning and informed police.
Absence of any houses nearby helped the gang escape after committing the crime, police said, adding, a case has been registered.
