The average man tells 3 lies a day - or a whopping 1,092 a year, as opposed to women who fib just twice a day or 728 times a year.
The research, however, found that women were more likely to lie in certain situations, such as when buying new clothes.
As many as 39 per cent of women felt the need to lie about their latest purchases compared to just 26 per cent of men.
In the study, half of the women participants admitted to to lying opposed to just over a third of men.
Other findings from the survey show that people are often tempted to lie to make life easier.
For example, nearly 20 per cent of the respondents declared that lying to a boss to pull a 'sickie' from work was justifiable.

When it came to cheating on partners, 13 per cent of people admitted they thought that lying to their partner about an affair was not harmful.
Karen Pine, Professor of Developmental Psychology at the University of Hertfordshire, said that she believes the art of lying is a vital characteristic of humans.
"We think lying is bad, but actually the ability to deceive others has helped humans survive as a species," Pine was quoted by the 'Daily Express' as saying.
"Everybody lies, but we have to know when it's OK to do it and when not. It might be OK to say you like your friend's new hairdo when you don't really, because the fib could be good for the friendship," said Pine.
