A 30-year-old "mentally-disturbed" man was detained with a licenced pistol and live cartridges near the house of Ahmed Patel, political secretary to Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, police said today.

Police intercepted a car last night at a barricade on Mother Teresa Crescent Road near Patel's residence.

A senior police official said the youth was talking about becoming President of the country. "He was mentally disturbed. We took him to a nearby police station.

"We also checked his car and recovered a pistol and 21 live cartridges. He had licence for pistol. He also did not tell us why he was carrying a pistol and also did not tell us where he wanted to go," the official said.

He was also examined by doctors and his family members were informed.
