A 28-year-old mentally ill man committed suicide by hanging himself in a bathroom of a hospital in Kanpur, police said today.

They said Shivkaran, a native of Banda district, was mentally unstable and had earlier tried committing suicide by touching a high voltage power line, in which he sustained high degree burns. He was admitted to a hospital where the doctors had to remove his right hand to prevent the infection from spreading.

Shivakaran last evening committed suicide by hanging himself from a rope tied to the tap in the hospital's bathroom while his father was away to purchase medicines, police said.

Shivakaran's father said he was employed at a brick field in Haryana where his health deteriorated following which he returned to Banda in January. Doctors here were treating him for mental illness, police said.

Further probe in the case is on, they added.
