: Some 300 activists of Tamil Nadu Cattle Merchants Welfare Association were arrested here today when they staged a demonstration to protest against the 'so called animal rights activists' preventing transportation and sale of cattle.

Raising slogans against them, the agitators claimed that in the name of animal rights, they were seizing cows and accommodating to goshalas, affecting their age-old business.

Association Secretary Tenral Selvaraj said the capacity of vehicles some decades back was only to carry a maximum of nine heads of cattle.

However, the capacity has increased now and vehicles could accommodate nearly 20 cattle. Accordingly Government and police department should allow more cattle to be carried so that the business was ot affected, he said.

Police said they were arrested as they had not obtained permission for the demonstration.
