The mercury dropped to five degrees Celsius in this Odisha's Kandhamal district headquarter town today, the lowest this season so far, hitting normal life.

While Phulbani recorded the minimum temperature of 5 degrees Celsius, the mercury stood at 6.5 degree Celsius at Daringbadi in the district, the local Meteorological Observatory said.

Apart from Phulbani and Daringbadi, the cold wave conditions swept elsewhere in the district and paralysed normal life in G Udayagiri, Balliguda, Kotagarh and Tumudibandha blocks.

Reports of fish and birds being found dead due to the cold were received from different parts of the district, particularly from the high-altitude areas of the region.
