Mercury rises in north; high humidity in Delhi

Temperatures inched up in the absence of rainfall in northern India today with high humidity levels making for sultry conditions in the region.

In Delhi, the mercury rose three notches above normal to touch 36.6 degrees Celsius even as the humidity in air fluctuated between 46 and a high 86 per cent.

The minimum in the national capital, however, remained close to normal levels at 25.5 degrees.

Although Delhi witnessed partially cloudy skies, there was no rain in the city.

Maximum temperatures also rose a few notches above normal in the states of Punjab and Haryana.

The Union Territory of Chandigarh recorded a high of 33.6 degrees Celsius, up by a notch above normal, local weather officials said.
 

In Punjab, the mercury in Ludhiana and Patiala touched 34.6 and 35 degrees, respectively, up two notches each, while Amritsar registered a high of 34.8 degrees.

Narnaul in Haryana saw the mercury soar by four notches to touch 38.5 degrees while Karnal was up three notches above normal at 34.8 degrees.

Hisar, Ambala, and Bhiwani recorded maximums of 38, 34.5 and 37.4 degrees, respectively.

The forecast is for light to moderate rainfall at isolated places across the two neighbouring states over the coming 24 hours.
