The MeT department on Tuesday forecast heavy rain in most parts of West Bengal, including the metropolis, from Wednesday, dampening spirits in the run- up to Kali Puja and Diwali.
The formation of a low-pressure area over West Central and adjoining South West Bay of Bengal on Tuesday with strong moisture incursion from the Bay of Bengal will lead to enhanced rainfall activity in West Bengal from October 23 to 26, the weatherman said in its forecast.
Some districts, including Purulia and Bankura are likely to receive very heavy rain at one or two places, while most places in the state will experience moderate to heavy rain till Saturday morning.
While Kali Puja will be held in the state on October 27, Diwali will be celebrated on the next day.
Preparations for the festival of lights are likely to be affected owing to the rains, which may take away some of the sheen from the celebrations.
Kali Puja is held throughout West Bengal by clubs and other organisations as a community festival as well as in numerous households.
Some of the biggest community Kali Pujas are held at Barasat, Naihati and Barrackpore in North 24 Parganas, with people making a beeline for seeing the huge deities as tall as 25 to 30 feet along with artworks of pandals and colourful lights adorning the vicinity.
