American heavy metal band Metallica is set to headline this year's Glastonbury festival.

The second night of the iconic festival, will witness the extravaganza by Lars Ulrich and company to be hosted in Somerset, south-west England, reported Contactmusic.

The band will also join 'Reflektor' famed Arcade Fire and English band Kasabian in closing another night at the festival.

The Glastonbury Festival is an annual music carnival and is recorded as world's largest festival to be hosted on natural pastures. Last year bands like Rolling Stone and Arctic Monkey headlined the festival.

Although many have expressed surprise at the decision to have a heavy metal act headline the festival, but organisers do not think it matters too much about who is chosen to perform on the main stage as the event offers a number of choice.

"Everything is now in place. We are more than happy with the calibre of the acts. The headliner on Saturday will be one of the biggest-selling bands in the world at the moment," said organiser Michael Eavis.

The festival will be hosted between June 27-29 and all tickets are already sold out.
