The tunnelling work between Netaji Subhash Place and Shalimar Bagh on the Mukundpur-Shiv Vihar line under phase three of metro construction has been completed.

According to a spokesperson, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has completed the tunnelling work between Netaji Subhash Place and Shalimar Bagh today by making a Tunnel Boring Machine breakthrough at Shalimar Bagh.

The TBM completed the tunnelling of the 1,230-metre stretch between Netaji Subhash Place and Shalimar Bagh, consisting of 1,025 rings with a diameter of 5.7 metres.

Earlier, the same machine had completed another tunnel breakthrough in March this year on this section.

The machine was lowered into launching shaft at Netaji Subhash Place in April this year after retrieval and maintenance, the spokesperson said.

This tunnel also crossed the elevated viaduct of the currently operational Dilshad Garden-Rithala Metro corridor near Netaji Subhash Place, canal crossing and Kasturba Polytechnic building, under construction elevated road at Shalimar Bagh etc. Which were major engineering challenges.

This section is part of the 59-km Majlis Park-Shiv Vihar corridor of Phase III and has about 14 kms of underground lines.
