Mexican superstar Juan Gabriel, the bigger-than-life performer who at the age of 66 revamped his career in spectacular fashion, has died unexpectedly.

The veteran crooner passed away on Sunday from a suspected heart attack in Santa Monica, California, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Gabriel was in the middle of his massive MeXXico Es Todo Tour, and had just performed at the Forum in Los Angeles on Friday.

Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto took to Twitter to pay tribute to one of the country's most beloved stars, writing, "I regret the death of Juan Gabriel, one of the great musical icons of our country.

"My condolences to your family and friends. A voice and a talent representing Mexico. His music, a legacy to the world. He was gone too soon. Rest in peace."

Gabriel, also known as the El Divo de Juarez, released more than 35 albums throughout his 40-year career.

He is survived by his four children.
