Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto has said he hoped for "respectful" relations with US president Donald Trump, who has insulted Mexicans, but vowed to protect his country's interests in dealings with Washington.

"We will work together to strengthen our relationship," Pena Nieto wrote on Twitter, congratulating Trump on his swearing-in yesterday.

"We will establish a respectful dialogue with the government of @realDonaldTrump," he added.

"Sovereignty, the national interest and protection for Mexicans will guide our relations with the new US government."

Trump has vowed to build a wall on the border with Mexico to keep out undocumented immigrants and to revise trade deals to protect US jobs.

During the election campaign he said many Mexican immigrants were criminals and rapists.

Mexico said its foreign affairs and economy ministers will meet with their new US counterparts on Wednesday and Thursday.
