Tokyo, Feb 21 (Kyodo) A top Japanese company has developed a remote-controlled robot capable of working at heights up to 8 meters and moving freely in inaccessible areas to humans such as highly radioactive environments like the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear complex.
The "MHI-Super Giraffe" was developed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. Under a project entrusted by the government-affiliated New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization for use at the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear complex of Tokyo Electric Power Co.
The robot, which is 2.35 meters long, 0.8 meter wide and weighs 4 tons, is powered by a lithium-ion rechargeable battery.

It is capable of various tasks including valve opening and closing, decontamination work and leakage detection, the company said.
